Mr. Kagan was remembered as never wavering in his support of Acadia and its mission. In presenting the award The Acadia Hospital CEO Dorothy E. Hill recalled Mr. Kagan’s commitment to the creation of Acadia Hospital over 15 years ago, and his continued dedication to make Acadia’s services available to all who needed them.
Mr. Kagan’s wife, Paula Kagan accepted the award, and other members of the Kagan family were in attendance.
Dorothea Dix, known as America’s Mother of Mental Health, was a shy schoolteacher from Hampden, Maine. Although burdened by poor health due to tuberculosis, Ms. Dix spent the majority of her life in the mid-1800’s crusading for better care for individuals living with mental illness.
