The Acadia Hospital is pleased to offer a new approach to how we admit and treat teens dealing with substance abuse issues.
Formerly known as FOCUS, the Adolescent Substance Abuse Outpatient Program now offers easy access through our Monday-Friday walk-in diagnostic evaluations offered at 12 Noon, or you can call 973-6048 any time with questions or to set-up an evaluation.
This outpatient therapeutic program is for adolescents who are experiencing minimal to severe addiction to substances. The teen's family is also encouraged to participate in the treatment process.
The newly reorganized program now runs from 12:30 to 2:30 PM Monday through Friday and offers adolescents effective and creative ways to manage their addiction and make safe changes in their lifestyles and environment. We have integrated many experiential components into the program and have seen improved attendance and a higher level of involvement from our clients. Below are some comments that reflect how the changes are connecting with the teens in our program—
Jeremy H.
"I really enjoyed coming to group. You guys supported me and helped me to get focused and stay out of trouble."
Amanda A.
"I want to come like once a week to remember what I have learned and how I am thinking right now. The hospital has helped me so much. It's not like the groups in my area where we talked about the same things over and over. Your personalities make it fun and we talk and do a lot of different things."
Justin C.
"You make it fun, it's not boring being here. It makes you want to come back. If its fun, you listen more to what's said and you can learn."
If you know of a teen who is struggling with substance abuse consider The Acadia Hospital's Adolescent Substance Abuse Outpatient Program.
The Adolescent Substance Abuse Program curriculum is highly interactive and was developed by The Acadia Hospital staff with input from teens. We look to partner with our clients and their families so we can work together to affect positive change. Below are some of the features of the program—
· Open Access – no waiting for admission. Diagnostic evaluations occur within 24 hours of request
· Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation – we do a complete evaluation of each perspective client
· Non-confrontational approach used
· Treatment plan tailored to meet individual's needs
· Minimal two week involvement; at end of two-week period staff performs a program evaluation with client to determine next steps
· Look to build on strengths, resources and aptitudes of each client
· Program is designed to challenge current ways of thinking and focus on making healthy changes through activities, games, and experiential programming (for example, Acadia has its own ropes course on campus)
Here is more feedback from some of our teen clients—
Josh B.
"I enjoyed group. It was relaxed, not a lot of restrictions and we could talk about anything to you guys and you wouldn't judge us."
Rebecca C.
"I enjoy coming. We talk about ourselves and discuss how to change things in our life. I feel comfortable and you seem to care and you show me respect."
Jesse M.
"I look forward to coming here. I am coming during school and I actually know a few people from school that should come."
