Support and Self Help Groups at Acadia Hospital (revised 01/08)
The Acadia Hospital 268 Stillwater Avenue PO Box 422 Bangor, ME 04402-0422 207-973-6100 800-640-1211 TDD: 207-973-6103
Whether you're looking for help parenting a troubled child or need a shoulder to lean on while recovering from substance abuse, you'll find support at The Acadia Hospital.
The following groups are held on the hospital's campus and are free of charge. These groups are open to those who are interested and meet the group's criteria. If there is a group contact person listed, we suggest that you call them before attending your first meeting. The facilitator, or contact person, can help you decide if the support or self-help group is right for you.
Please note that not all of the groups listed are facilitated by The Acadia Hospital's employees or directly affiliated with the hospital. As part of our mission to provide education and support to the community, we have opened our doors and meeting rooms to several "outside" organizations to offer their valuable services.

Opioid and Addiction Educational Program
On the fourth Wednesday every other month from 6:00 to 7:30 PM The Acadia Hospital hosts a free educational program titled "Opioids and Addiction". It is offered to anyone who is interested including patients, their family and friends, providers, even interested people from the community without connections to the hospital.
This program was created at the suggestion of Acadia patients and features Acadia's Director of Substance Abuse Services Brent Scobie, LCSW talking about a variety of opioid-related topics like—what are opioids, where do opioids come from, the current environment in Maine relative to pharmaceuticals, how opioids influence the brain in the short and long term, their addictive potential compared to other substances of abuse, etc.
Scobie also provides information on treatments for opioid addiction, issues with chronic pain and addiction, and outcomes relative to medication treatment options (agonist versus partial agonists) versus standard therapeutic interventions. The program is presented in easy to understand terms with significant amount of time to ask questions.
The meeting schedule for the dates until January 2008 is: August 22, October 24 and the December meeting, due to the holidays, will be held in January of '08 on the 23rd.
Please call 973-6100 with any questions.
